A load of restocks at a store opening? Not exactly front page news in 2017, but Champs Sports did much more than throw a few rare releases on the shelves for their Chicago flagship this past weekend. Offering second chances on “Space Jam” Air Jordan 11s, both OG Nike Air Max 97s and some choice adidas NMDs, the retail juggernaut made a footprint in the Windy City by embracing the arts and offering locals a chance to cop kicks and see shows.
Teaming up with Little Black Pearl Academy, the two-story space on State & Monroe stands near sister stores like Footaction and Foot Locker but manages to standout with Chicago made art covering the walls in fresh fashion. Offering dedicated sections to the likes of Under Armour, adidas, Nike, Jordan, PUMA and Timberland, the massive brick and mortar may be spaced by out by brands but proved to be a place of inclusion as live activations brought in kids from all around the city. Ranging from a style panel with Smino to performances by Joey Purp, Saba and Towkio, the space was filled with music and locals the entire time as patrons browsed recent releases and team gear from the likes of the Bulls, Cubs, Bears and Sox.
