Sidelined with an Achilles injury since November 2017, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman will make his long-awaited comeback on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. To help commemorate the occasion, Sherman will be hitting the field in Nike cleats inspired by Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

Here’s more on Sherman’s cleats from ESPN’s Nick Wagoner:

When Sherman steps on the field Sunday for his first regular-season game in 10 months, don’t be surprised if he has some special footwear for the occasion. Sherman asked Bryant for a pair of Kobe football cleats, a request Bryant and Nike happily accommodated.

Sherman is paying homage to Bryant this way because the former Lakers star was instrumental to him during his rehabilitation. Bryant suffered a similar injury during his illustrious career so when Sherman ruptured his right Achilles tendon, the Lakers legend was the perfect person for him to talk to about rehabilitation and recovery.

It is unclear how Sherman’s Kobe-inspired cleats will actually look but it wouldn’t be surprising if Bryant’s jersey numbers and Black Mamba moniker plays a part in the overall design.
