In this day and age, sneakers are more than just shoes. For some, they are conversation pieces while others may view them as their most coveted possessions. But for a high school student in Fairfax, Virginia, a pair of sneakers has not only landed a graduating senior a day of detention, but has led to her being denied her diploma and having her transcript withheld as well.

While graduation is an exciting time in a student’s academic life, Rachel’s experience has been marred by controversy thanks largely in part to a dress code infraction she incurred during the graduating ceremony from Paul VI Catholic High School. Opting to rock a pair of kicks instead of heels across the big stage, to avoid any ill-advised falls, Rachel has to complete a single day of detention for her footwear choice. Do you feel like the school was justified in their actions? How would you feel if you couldn’t break out a pair of sneakers for graduation?
