New Balance 1300 History
The New Balance 1300 entered the scene in 1984 as a premium running shoe, priced at a then-staggering $130, which would be equivalent to around $300 today. New Balance backed up this price by boldly stating that the 1300 was the “very best running shoe ever made”.
Initially produced in the USA, the 1300 quickly gained a reputation for its quality and comfort. While it began as a performance shoe, it gradually transitioned into a lifestyle sneaker as running technology evolved.
In the early 1995, the 1300 rereleased under the supervision of New Balance Japan as the New Balance 1300JP, an attempt at making the shoe more accessible to the Japanese public. This rerelease was widely successful, and the 1300JP remains a highly anticipated retro that comes out every 5 years, the next release coming in 2025. The dive into the Japanese markets led to a resurgence of popularity that introduced new colorways and collaborations.
While the New Balance 1300 no longer holds the title of the “very best running shoe ever made”, it instead has the legacy of a release that sent shockwaves through the sneaker community, and a model that still remains very popular after all these years.
