New Balance 990 History
The New Balance 990 first hit the market in 1982, revolutionizing the running shoe industry with its premium design and hefty $100 price tag. Initially created as a high-performance running shoe, it quickly gained popularity among both athletes and casual wearers for its superior comfort and quality.
Throughout the years, the 990 has undergone several iterations, each maintaining the shoe’s core DNA while incorporating technological advancements. The 990v2 arrived in 1998, followed by the v3 in 2012, the v4 in 2016, the v5 in 2019, and the most recent v6 in 2022. Each version refined the shoe’s design and performance features.
The 990 has also become a canvas for collaborations with fashion designers and brands, elevating its status as a style icon. Notable partnerships include those with Concepts, Kith, and JJJJound, among others. These limited editions often sell out quickly and command high resale prices.
The New Balance 990 gave breath to New Balance’s most well known series, the 99X line, and became the steady face of the brand. With continued iterations, collabs, and versions, it doesn’t seem like that role is changing anytime soon.
