Names can be a tricky thing. In many ways they can be daunting because they act in perpetuity, or in other words, forever. Nonetheless, a global entity that has become a staple of everyone’s life was almost named something totally different as this Business Insider article describes how Nike was close to being named “Dimension Six”.
According to the article, in 1964 CEO Phil Knight and Oregon head track coach Bill Bowerman founded Blue Ribbon Sports with the intention of distributing running shoes made by Japanese retailer Onitsuka Tiger which is now Asics. By 1971, Knight looked to distribute his very own shoe, under their very own brand which almost become “Dimension Six”. Some of Knight closest confidants believe that name derived from Knight’s love of the band The 5th Dimension. All in all, cooler heads prevailed and the Nike namesake would soon derive. This is an interesting tidbit that could’ve shifted the landscape of sports entirely.
