Following last year’s Bephie’s Beauty Supply x Union LA x Air Jordan 1 High OG release, Union keeps ’em coming with a new Nike Field General trio.

Inspired by the Field General’s football origins and Union LA founder Chris Gibbs’ own high school football career in correlation to the Field General’s genesis, the collection revisits the model with a lifestyle approach à la Union.

The Los Angeles-based boutique is releasing three colorways of the Nike Field General, an ’80s turf shoe that was originally designed for football players. Pittsburgh Steelers running back Franco Harris sported a pair in a promotional Nike poster circa 1983.

As of now, images of the Union LA x Nike Field General have yet to surface, but a low-top profile with leather overlays and a treaded outsole is to be expected.

The 2024 release of the Union LA x Nike Field General will be the first time that the silhouette has returned to retail, over 40 years after its debut. Union’s co-sign on the Nike Field General will help to garner hype for the sneaker and is sure to result in a flux of in-line releases.

In 2014, Nike introduced a Hyperfuse revamp of the Nike Field General, but the sneaker was never officially retroed up until early 2024. The 2014 Nike Field General ’82 featured the same low-top profile but received a performance upgrade and incorporated modern design finishes like lightweight mesh.

In addition to the Nike Field General ’82, Nike also released the Zoom Field General in 2014, a newly fashioned football shoe that shares a name with the Field General but is constructed with its own design language.

Union has been a longtime partner of Nike, both as a NBHD store and a collaborator. In 1989, Union opened its doors in New York City as a hub for streetwear sought after by the cool kids of Soho. Eventually, the boutique went west and embraced new local LA designers, as well as niche global finds from the UK and Japan.

The boutique released its first collaborative sneaker with the Swoosh in 2005, with the Nike Air Force 180 being the silhouette of choice. In 2018, Union’s presence in the sneaker scene exploded with the release of the Union x Air Jordan 1, which was ultimately the domino that set off a wave of new collabs from the partners including the Nike Dunk Low “Passport” Pack, Air Jordan 4 “Tent and Trails” Capsule, Air Jordan 2 “Future Is Now” Collection, and more.
